I'm not a big film geek or critic, but I do enjoy watching movies that inspire me with messages and characters that I resonate with. Here are some movies that I have watched this summer with short descriptions and thoughts from me.
Whiplash (2014)
A movie that I watched recently was Whiplash, it really blew me away. The main character Andrew is a jazz drummer who had the one goal of becoming "one of the greats". It is inspiring at a surface level because it makes you want to become great at something, but when you dive deeper you realize how dangerous it could be to become so obsessed with a goal. That way of living is definitely not for everyone. You have to be willing to give up social interactions and hobbies.
Dear Friends (2007)
To be honest, I can't really recommend this movie unless you like the 2007 film aesthetic and the girl from Tokyo Drift, even then it felt like the movie was missing something. I get what message the movie was trying to convey, but it was a bit hard to take serious at times. Basically, the main character Rin rejects the idea of friendship. She uses the people around her for her own benefit and doesn't have any emotional attachments to anyone. Rin is a girl with everything going for her from looks and money to status. So what happens when that is all taken from her? This film explores that idea.
Moneyball (2011)
I really enjoyed this movie. As a new fan of baseball and a sports fan in general, it was cool to see what kind of problems a General Manager of a sports team has to overcome when putting together a team, especially when they have barely have the funds to do so. Brad Pitt's performance in this movie is really good. You really feel his stress and frustration. Things hardly go his way, but he continues to try and work hard to reach goals. My biggest takeaway from the film is that, often times, there are multiple approaches one may need to try to reach their goals.
Seven (1995)
I must be in a Brad Pitt phase because this is the second Brad Pitt movie I have watched in the last 30 days. I have heard people talk about this movie here and there, but I finally got to experience it for myself. Seven is a detective film starring both Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman who partner up to take down a serial killer. This movie explores the seven deadly sins in a really interesting way. The movie blurs the lines between good and evil by showing that everyone has sins of their own. The movie has good pacing with a gradual build up and a crazy ending!
